A slice of Europe in Byron Bay

Photographer David Young and his Interior Designer wife, Kate Platt, are selling their Byron Bay home for $4.4 million.

The property has been a labour of love for the couple, who bought the land 20 years ago after moving from Sydney for a sea change. Inspired by their many travels to Europe, Kate has designed the villa, named Araucaria, from scratch with her eye for detail and flair for colour, texture and finishes. Some imported treasures include Spanish tiles, Italian fabrics and French light fittings.

The couples love of entertaining has significantly influenced the design, with varied living spaces providing a different ambiance to suit many occasions, and with the best in modern conveniences complimenting the villa’s elegant charm.

‘‘Creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable was the most important aspect when I designed this home,” says Kate Platt.

Set high up in Ewingsdale, just minutes from Byron’s beaches and with views to the famous lighthouse and coastline, the properties grounds include entertaining terraces, manicured gardens, and a luxurious pool house – all of which take in the surrounding rolling green hills of the Byron Hinterland.

“I love being able to go out and pick herbs from the garden to cook for guests,” says Platt.

Kournikova, who has been in a relationship with pop star Enrique Iglesias for 9 years, purchased the property 11 years ago for $5 million.

Just Jeans founders to sell Oasis

Craig and Connie Kimberley, who’s family founded the Just Jeans Group fashion and apparel retail giant, have placed their Port Douglas hilltop retreat on the market.

Kalimna, which is aboriginal for ‘beautiful place’, is the largest private residential property in Port Douglas, with its land size being in excess of 4000 square metres. It boasts panoramic views over the Coral Sea, Four Mile beach through to the rainforest beyond.

Built in 1991, the residence was designed by award winning architect Christine Vadasz and consists of nine separate pavilions that cascade down the hillside, linked by elevated walkways, stone pathways and an inclinator.

“Buildings should merge with the landscape, flowing down and across the land like water. They should respond to the landscape and the local climate,” says Architect, Christine Vadasz.

The residence maximizes its location with mature, lush tropical landscaping, private sanctuaries and a centerpiece of shared indoor/outdoor living and entertaining.

Wide expansive timber decks curve around the hillside and connect the dining, lounge and living spaces. The designer kitchen overlooks a landscaped waterfall which runs into a water garden surrounding the tea house pavilion and further along to the day bed area, with views of Double Island, Low Isles and the coastline.

The split level master bedroom pavilion comprises an en-suite bathroom, indoor/outdoor shower and home office on the lower level. The pavilion connects via a walkway to the 20 metre infinity edge pool flanked by a frangipani cloaked arbour.  There are four separate guest rooms plus a self contained cottage ideal for a caretaker or nanny.

Constructed to the highest levels of craftsmanship, the pavilions are constructed of timber, stone and glass, accented by steeped temple ceilings with exposed beams, allowing light and airflow to permeate throughout the residence.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own the finest expression of tropical living in Australia, at the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest,” says agent Chris Buse, Director of Coldwell Banker Barrier Reef Realty.

Kalimna is being sold via expressions of interest and is expected to attract offers in excess of $10 million dollars.

Melbourne’s most coveted sells

Last Sunday saw one of Melbourne’s most coveted pieces of land in St Vincent Place, Albert Park, break weeks of poor sales fetching a handsome sum of $6.62 million.

“The property will go down as a land mark sale, irrelevant of the market conditions,” says Agent Oliver Bruce.

The vendor, Ross Lay, former treasurer of the Albert Park bowls club, and his family had owned the home for 52 years.

The auction attracted an enormous crowd and saw over 250 parties through during the inspections. Bidding for the property started at $4 million, however quickly rose with $50 thousand bids, and a battle between four serious bidders.

“The property is one of the largest holdings in the area, and being located in the best street of the best suburb, and in what is ranked as one of the best cities in the world to live, you could say that this property presents an opportunity to own one of the best houses in the world,” says Bruce.

The un-renovated c1866 property, named Rosebank, includes a double fronted Victorian residence with eight principal rooms, ornate ceilings, and gracious proportions. It features four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and parking for three cars.

The property also features the original solid brick double storey stables, currently configured as a studio and garage, as well as two Victorian timber cottages.
