New life in an old form

Constructive Group Managing Director Richard Harris, and Dietitian wife Carly, have listed their home for sale in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran after 10 years.

Richard has had a 16 year career in the commercial construction industry working on some of Melbourne’s landmark buildings such as Crown Casino, Chadstone Shopping centre, and the ‘Trail of the Elephants’ and Orangutan enclosure at the Melbourne Zoo.

Their home, which was featured in Home Beautiful in 2005, is positioned close to the wonderful things that diverse and funky Prahran has to offer, whilst being far enough away to offer a peaceful retreat.

Renovated under the close direction of Architect Andrew Wilson, the home includes the original Victorian frontage and façade, a gas heated plunge pool, climate controlled wine cellar, and extensive use of Italian stone and timber. It also features four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a gourmet-style kitchen, and an entertainers courtyard garden.

Glenfield Brought back to life

One of Australia’s oldest and finest homesteads has been put on the market in the historic town on Casula.

Named ‘Glenfield’, this magnificent Georgian Colonial-style home was built in 1817 by explorer Dr Charles Throsby, who was a naval surgeon, magistrate member of the Legislative Council, and explorer.

The property has been lovingly restored by the Historic Houses Trust under their Endangered Houses Fund to the cost of $1.8 million dollars, with hopes to bring the estate life again.

“To have a property dating back to 1817 to the Macquarie era with so much of the original material intact is quite extraordinary,” says Richard Silink, from the Historic Houses Trust.

The properties main residence is spread over 14 grand rooms, and includes four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and original Georgian details. The grounds include a lawn grass tennis court, an orchard, new fencing, stables, and a dairy.

“Many of the details usually lost to renovations in a house this old are still there - things like beautiful fine cedar joinery, door handles and locks,” says Silink.

The Capitol: A Life of Distinction

Combining elegant architecture and superior living, The Capitol South Yarra sets a new benchmark for distinguished residences and penthouses in Melbourne.

Standing at the crossroads of Toorak Road and Chapel Street, the development will regenerate the former Capitol Bakery, and more recently the Fun Factory site, into what will be the tallest building outside Melbourne’s CBD, giving the iconic site the enduring landmark building it deserves.

Comprising 210 spacious and superbly appointed residences and penthouses across a 38-level tower, The Capitol South Yarra offers beautifully finished and generously sized residences from one bedroom to full floor penthouses ranging in size from 70 to 960 square metres, all with balconies from which to enjoy sweeping views of the city, or bay, or both.

Architects and Interior Designers Bates Smart designed the residences from the inside out to ensure the focus is on the experience within.

“We believe luxury is as much about the absence of problems as it is about fine finishes and well-designed spaces,” says Chairman and Design Architect Roger Poole.

Residences feature timeless interiors as seen in the neutral colour palette and seamless transitions between finishes and quality detailing such as stone benchtops, large timber sliding screens with upholstered leather panels, and solid wide timber flooring that combine to provide an overall sense of harmony and balance.

Jeffery Copolov, Interior Design Director at Bates Smart, adds “We set about creating an interior that reflects the calmness and serene respite that modern life should be about. As one journeys through the apartment, it’s a sequence of spaces that evolve from one area to the other, each taking on a sense of grandeur from the next.”

Sub penthouse and penthouse apartments include stone-clad open fireplaces, walk in pantry and sculleries, wine fridges, Miele appliances, dressing rooms, luxurious master bathrooms, and abundant storage.

The development boasts access to a 24-hour concierge, full time management staff, a porte cochere and a hotel-style lobby with an intimate residential parlour, oversized fireplace and adjacent library.

It also boasts a country-club-style oasis named ‘The Capitol Club’, which is an urban sanctuary on level six. It features a dramatic pool pavilion, media room, dining room with serviced kitchen, gymnasium, and a residents lounge that sits high above Chapel Street providing a calm contrast to the neighbourhood below.

Prices at The Capitol South Yarra range from $850,000 for a two bedroom residence, through to $15 million for a full-floor penthouse. A limited number of one bedroom residences are also available on application.

Basking in Brighton's Bygone era

The original home of the Mytton family, of whom the street was named after, has been released to the market for only the second time since the original development in the 1920’s.

With over 500 square meters of private gardens in Brighton’s Golden Mile, this home known as 8 Mytton Grove is only a stone’s through from Brighton Yacht Club, Pier and baths.

Originally built by the Mytton family as their own private residence, the home is a 40 square Art Deco beauty constructed over two levels to exacting standards within a block of 11 Apartments. It has now been lovingly restored and renovated whilst retaining many of the original features including the etched glass mural of the Brighton Beach Diving Girl in the main bathroom.

The Brighton Beach diving girl is believed to be Annette Marie Sarah Kellerman who was an Australian professional swimmer, vaudeville, film star and writer. She was the first women to wear a one-piece bathing costume and inspired others to follow her example. Annette is often credited for inventing the sport of synchronised swimming after her 1907 performance of the first water ballet in a glass tank at the New York Hippodrome and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of fame.

The home features five bedrooms, three bathrooms, formal lounge/ballroom and split level dining, open plan kitchen and casual living/dining, outdoor entertaining area, ducted heating, cooling, polished floor boards, loads of storage, parking for up to 5 cars and views of the Brighton Marina and Pier.
