Historic Homestead hits the market

Max Magilton is selling his magnificent estate in the Victorian suburb of Camperdown for over $5 million.

Purrumbete Homestead was originally built by the Manifold family, who founded Geelong Grammar, in 1857. Over the years as the Manifolds wealth increased, the family renovated the house and its facade, making it one of the most significant examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Australia.

Stretching over 2km of Lake Purrumbete shoreline, the ten-bedroom, seven-bathroom house features carvings by Robert Prenzel and a series of murals in the hallway painted by Walter Withers from the Heidelberg school depicting the story of how the family settled there.

“Purrumbete is historically significant and one of Australia’s original country homesteads,” says agent Andrew Baines.

Historic outbuildings include two seperate renovated cottages, the Bluestone Shearers quarters, Coach House, Blacksmiths shop, Clydesdale stables and a restored Glass House.

Paintings of the homestead, by Colonial artist Eugene Van Guerard, hang in the National Gallery of Canberra.
