Historic Palma Rosa mansion sells in a stir

Hundreds of people have turned up to witness one of Brisbane’s landmark properties be auctioned in amidst protestors, thieves and wild weather.

The property was owned by the English Speaking Union (ESU), since 1972, whose former members tried to stop the auction, and allegedly stole photos from the house during the auction.

‘Palma Rosa’, located on Queens Road in Hamilton, sold for $3.715 million to a local family who are reportedly dedicated to restoring the 1887 mansion to its former glory.

The heritage listed mansion is thought to be one of Australia’s finest examples of Italian architecture built by Andrea Stombuco and was once the home of former Queensland Premier Sir Arthur Palmer, who was notorious in the area for his race-day verandah parties which overlooked Albion Park Racecourse.

All sales to date have been to owner-occupiers. The average price of the remaining apartments is $1.46 million with the 13 penthouses ranging from $1.8 million to just under $3 million.
